4 KITS and Studio Set-Up

1. DRAWING KIT: Rough cost = $50
Please have all these materials at beginning of Fall Term.
-Sketchbook (I like to use Fabriano gridded sketchbooks)
-Graphite Pencils (assortment: HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B)
-Erasers (I like these )
-Pencil Sharpener
-Rulers and Triangles (2 sets)
2. COLLAGE & GOUACHE KIT: Rough cost = $220
*If you already have opaque water media, such as acrylics and/or designer gouache, you can use that instead of the acryla gouache.) Please have all these materials at beginning of Fall Term, exception noted below.
-Black Paper (Cardstock, Construction Paper, or Drawing Paper)
-White Paper to Paint (thinner) (Ex: Drawing Paper, Printer Paper, etc)
-White Paper to Mount on to (thicker) (Ex: Cardstock, Bristol, Watercolor Paper)
-Glue Sticks (get a box)
-Scissors/ Xacto Knife
-Tracing Paper
-Tubes of Black and White Holbein Acryla Gouache (Primary Black OR Jet Black OR other; Primary White OR Titanium White or other; 20ml or 40ml)
-Tubes of Neutral Gray 1, 2, 3, 4 Holbein Acryla Gouache; 20ml or 40ml)
-Tubes of Primary and Secondary Hues in Acryla Gouache (versions of Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet). Set of 18 Artist Colors, or individual tubes. You can just purchase individual Orange and Blue for Fall Term
-Water Media Brushes (I like small rounds)
-Pad of Disposable Palette Paper, or other palette
-Spray Bottle & Small Squeeze Bottle for Water
-Container/Jar for Water (for cleaning brushes)
3. CRAYON KIT: Rough cost = $85
*If you already have colored drawing media such as colored pencils, markers, etc, you can use that instead. Please have all these materials at beginning of Fall Term, exception noted below.
-Caran d'Ache Neocolor II OR Neocolor II Artists' Pastel Set -Assorted Colors, Set of 30You can just purchase individual Orange and Blue for Fall Term
-Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle Artists' Pastel Individual crayons - 009(Black), 007(Dark gray), 005 (Gray), 003 (light gray), and 001 (white)
-Sketchbook (I like to use Fabriano gridded sketchbooks, same as Drawing Kit)
-Rulers and Triangles (I like to have a 2nd, separate set for crayons)
4. OIL KIT: Rough cost = $450–700 (depending on existing supplies and paint brands)
Please have all these materials by our 3rd week of Fall Term, prioritizing pigments noted below. (*see budget list below)
PAINT:
I like to use Gamblin, Winsor & Newton (NOT Winton), and Williamsburg paints.

FULL CHROMA PIGMENTS:
-Cadmium Orange priority for Fall Term
-Ultramarine Blue. priority for Fall Term
-Phthalo Blue and/or Phthalo Turquoise
-Cadmium Red Light and/or Medium (or Napthol Red)
-Mars Red
-Phthalo Green (also called Windsor Green)
-Sap Green
-Cadmium Yellow Light (or Hansa Yellow Light)
-Mars Yellow
-Indian Yellow
-Dioxazine Violet (also called Winsor Violet (WN) and Egyptian Violet (Williamsburg)
-Quinacridone Magenta
*BUDGET LIST: If the above list of oil pigments is overwhelming, please be sure to have at least the following, and add on the others as you can:
-Titanium White
-Mars Black
-Cad Red Med (or other red such as Napthol Red)
-Cad Yellow Light (or other yellow such as Hansa Yellow Light)
-Ultramarine or Phthalo Blue
-Quinacridone Magenta (or other magenta)
MEDIUM:
-Jug of Gamsol (odorless mineral spirits)
-Small Squeeze Bottle and Funnel for filling, and/or small dish.
-Small Jug of Refined Linseed Oil (optional)
-Small Jug of Dorland’s Wax Medium (optional)
TOOLS:
-Oil brushes: Bristle AND Smooth (I prefer Rounds and Filberts; I like Princeton “Imperial” and “Ashley” lines; Recommended Sizes: 2, 4, 6)
-Palette, I prefer Glass, but wood or other OK too. AT LEAST 16 x 20”
(If buying a sheet of glass, get tempered, ¼” thick, sanded around the edges. Place white paper under the glass, and a piece of cardboard or foam core under that, and then tape around the entire outside edge with packing or duct tape to attach. This will create a protective cushion for mixing.
-Razor Blade Scraper (for cleaning glass palette)
-Palette Knife (bent handle, spade or diamond shaped, I like a “medium trowel”)
-Viva! Paper Towels, or Rags
-Brush Cleaning Jar for Solvent
-Disposable Gloves (I like Kirkland brand Nitrile gloves)
SURFACES:
For most Studies:
-Arches Oil Paper Pads of 9 × 12” and/or 12 x 16” (or Pad of Primed Canvas Paper, or other surfaces as desired. )
For Extended Projects:
-Stretched Canvases and/or Larger Sheets of Arches Oil Paper (I recommend ordering several single sheets of the 16 “ x 20” Arches Oil Paper. They also have 22” x 30” sheets if you like to work even larger.)
-Drawing Boards/ Gator Boards/ Masonite Boards for mounting your Arches or Canvas Paper to while working.
-White Artists Tape, 1/2” or other
-Blue Hardware Tape
-24” Ruler or longer

(If you are using Canvas Paper and/or Stretched Canvas, it is always a good idea to experiment with additional layers of Gesso to create a surface to your liking.)
-Acrylic Gesso, White
-Hardware Brush for Applying
STUDIO SET-UP:
-I love just working flat on my table top for many of my smaller pieces and studies. I LOVE the Husky brand adjustable height/ moveable tables at Home Depot. I have several in my studio.
-Easel (Optional), Standing or Desktop, or Pochade Box and Tripod, etc.
-Still-Life Box/ “Theater” (make it yourself from Foamcore, Cardboard, Gator Board, Wood, etc)
-Clamp Light or Other moveable light (I like a warm LED bulb for my theater)
-Start collecting simple, geometric forms and objects for your Still Life Theater. SEE BELOW.
